California Electronic
Waste Recycling Act
Focused Stakeholder Meeting:
February 21, 2008
As the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 (SB 20 and SB 50, Sher) is implemented, meetings and workshops will be occasionally held to inform affected stakeholders and other interested parties.
The California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) will host a focused stakeholder meeting for participants in the covered electronic waste (CEW) recovery and recycling payment system and other interested parties to discuss potential adjustments to the CEW recovery and recycling payment rates, and/or the electronic waste recycling fees that fund the program. The workshop will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the Cal/EPA Headquarters Building in Sacramento and will last from 9 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m.
A general audio "webcast" is anticipated to be available for the proceedings. Web-based participants will be able to submit comments and questions via e-mail during the event through the ewaste@calepa.ca.gov address.
For facility logistical purposes, please RSVP at ewaste@calepa.ca.gov if you are planning to attend in person.
Details
The CEW recovery and recycling payment system has been operating under the same recovery and recycling payment rates paid to approved recyclers and collectors since the program began. The program has been funded by the same electronic waste recycling fee structure--a $6, $8, or $10 fee assessed on the sale of new covered devices--since the inception as well. Data indicate that an adjustment to the current payment rates is warranted. Additionally, the fund condition also indicates that a fee adjustment may be necessary to maintain solvency. The format of the meeting will be a structured conversation between program and participants about the implications of any financial adjustments to the program. It is anticipated that the morning will be spent discussing recovery and recycling payment rates, while the afternoon will be dedicated to issues associated with the electronic waste recycling fee.
An agenda will be made available prior to the meeting.
This meeting should be viewed as an opportunity for both the CIWMB and system participants to better understand the implications of payment and/or fee adjustments, and to continue what has been a robust and open dialog with stakeholders since the program's inception.
